Veterans Day

It is commonly known and appreciated that today is Veteran's Day.  It is a time to step back and express thanks for those who have put others before themselves.  Sometimes re-visiting the facts on the origin of this day helps in the depth of our appreciation for those this day is intended to recognize.

Why is Today Veteran's Day?

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, armistice between the Allies and Germany
ended the first World War. President Woodrow Wilson declared Armistice Day for November 11, 1919, commemorating peace after the end of a world war the following year. He proclaimed Armistice Day by stating;

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.”

Post WWI and Korea, Armistice day was rededicated to honor all Veterans and renamed Veteran's Day.
