Reserve Accounts in Merchant Processing Relationships

Nearly every merchant runs credit cards for its customers. To run credit cards merchants have a "merchant account" that generally runs through a merchant processing company. That merchant processing company is essentially a broker between the merchant and a bank.

As part of that relationship, the merchant account processor defends itself against chargebacks. The defense is usually in the form of a reserve account.

Enough of the mechanics and to the point: Do you, the merchant, know how much money your merchant processing company has of yours in the reserve account? I suspect not as most processors do not disclose the reserve amounts.

Merchants beware and get the details on your reserve account. Know the amount in reserves, know release dates, know how the amount put into reserves was calculated. If you find anomalies or don't get answers, I am here to help. It's your money, you have a right to know.
